Cutting at PJ

The foundation of great hair.

We don’t just cut hair. We design a haircut to suit you.

With over 20 years of combined experience in hairdressing, Peter and James have built their careers around the fundamentals of great cutting — and it will always be the bread and butter of PJ.

Trends change. Techniques evolve. But understanding shape, balance, movement and how hair naturally behaves never goes out of style.

Whether you visit us exclusively for your haircut, are ready for a complete restyle or your cut forms part of a wider hair journey, the same principle applies:

Your haircut should be designed around you.

Your face. Your hair. Your lifestyle.

No two people — and no two heads of hair — are exactly the same.

That’s why a haircut at PJ starts with understanding the person sitting in the chair.

We consider your face shape and features, natural texture, density, growth patterns, condition and movement when designing your cut.

But we also want to understand your lifestyle.

How much time do you have in the morning? Do you enjoy styling your hair or want something that requires minimal effort? Do you wear it naturally, straighten it, curl it or tie it up regularly? How often do you realistically want to maintain your shape?

A haircut can look incredible on somebody else and still not be the right haircut for you.

Our job is to take your inspiration and combine it with our understanding of shape, proportion, texture and technique to create something that complements your features, works with your hair and fits naturally into your life.

We don’t fit you to a haircut. We fit the haircut to you.

Understanding face shape.

Face shape is an important part of haircut design, but we don’t believe in rigid rules about what someone can and can’t wear.

Instead, we use our understanding of shape and proportion to determine how different lengths, fringes, layers, weight and movement can complement or emphasise your individual features.

Sometimes a subtle adjustment to where a layer falls, the length around the face or where weight is removed can completely change the finished result.

Combined with your hair’s natural characteristics and your personal style, this allows us to create something individual rather than prescribed.

It’s not about following rules. It’s about understanding balance.

Cutting is an art and a science.

Great cutting combines technical knowledge with creativity.

Shape, weight, graduation, elevation, texture and movement all influence how a haircut sits and behaves. Small changes in technique can make a significant difference to the finished result.

From precision bobs and short shapes to soft layers, movement, long hair, fringes and complete restyles, the technique we choose is determined by the individual in front of us.

Experience teaches you the fundamentals — and also when you need to adapt them.

Technique gives us the foundation. Artistry makes it yours.

Why regular cutting matters.

Your hair goes through a lot.

Heat, brushing, styling, chemical services and environmental exposure can gradually weather and weaken the ends of the hair. Over time, this can lead to splitting and breakage.

Once an end has split, it can’t permanently repair itself. If left, that damage can progress further up the hair shaft, leading to further breakage and making it more difficult to retain healthy-looking length.

Regular cutting removes compromised ends and helps maintain the shape, movement, condition and appearance of healthier, fuller hair.

For many clients, we recommend maintaining their haircut approximately every 6–12 weeks, depending on their style, hair condition, texture and individual goals.

And if you’re trying to grow your hair, avoiding the scissors altogether isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes keeping your hair longer means knowing when to cut it.

Hair and scalp health in mind.

Our understanding of hair and scalp health doesn’t stop because you’ve booked a haircut.

Changes in density, breakage, shedding or scalp health aren’t simply overlooked. We consider the condition of the hair and scalp as part of the bigger picture and, if we notice something that deserves more attention, we’ll talk to you about it.

Sometimes the answer is changing the way the hair is cut or cared for. Sometimes we may recommend taking a closer look through our dedicated scalp clinic.

At PJ, we look at the whole head of hair.

We’ll show you how to style it.

A great haircut shouldn’t only look good when your stylist does it.

Once your cut is complete, we’ll show you how to work with it at home — from how to dry it and create movement, smoothness or volume to the tools, techniques and professional products that can make styling easier.

And we’ll keep it realistic.

If you only have five minutes in the morning, we’re not going to design a haircut that needs a 45-minute blow-dry to look right.

We want you to leave understanding why your hair has been cut the way it has, how it should sit and how to recreate your finished look yourself.

Because the real test of a great haircut isn’t only how it looks when you leave PJ.

It’s how it works for you tomorrow morning.

Experience backed by education.

Experience gives you instinct. Education keeps you evolving.

Alongside Peter and James’ combined 20+ years in hairdressing, ongoing professional education is part of the culture at PJ for the entire team.

Our stylists continue to develop their understanding of cutting, shape, texture, styling and evolving techniques through professional education both in and outside the salon.

Strong technical foundations matter. So does continuing to learn.

When cut and colour come together.

For clients who also colour their hair with us, we consider the finished result as a whole.

The right shape can enhance movement and dimension within a colour, just as carefully placed colour can accentuate the architecture of a haircut.

But colour or no colour, great hair starts with a great cut.

Designed in the salon. Made for real life.

Whether you’ve worn the same signature shape for years, want to embrace your natural texture, need more movement, fancy a fringe or are ready for a complete transformation, your haircut should feel completely your own.

Beautiful in the salon. Manageable at home. Designed for the person wearing it.

Your face. Your hair. Your lifestyle. Your cut.
