The Scalp, Menopause & Hair Loss Clinic

PeterJames Scalp & Hair Clinic is rated 4.9 out of 5 from 163 reviews

At the PeterJames Scalp Clinic, trichology is at the heart of what we do. We take a closer look at your scalp and hair to help you understand what’s happening, why it may be happening, and what we can do to support you.

Your scalp is the foundation of your hair — and changes to either shouldn’t always be something you simply have to put up with.

Whether you’ve noticed increased shedding, thinning, irritation or changes to your hair during menopause, or you’ve been living with a troublesome scalp for years, the first step is understanding what’s going on. Not a five-minute add-on before a cut — a dedicated look at your scalp and hair on their own terms.

A closer look at your scalp

There’s only so much we can see with the naked eye.

During your consultation we use a high-magnification digital scalp microscope to take a much closer look at your scalp and hair. This helps us assess things such as dryness, oiliness, flaking, build-up, irritation, scalp condition and changes in hair density, giving us a much clearer picture before making our recommendations.

We combine what we see with a conversation about your hair, scalp, lifestyle, relevant history and current routine, to create a plan that’s personal to you.

What’s included

  • Digital scalp and follicle analysis — a high-magnification scalp camera that shows follicle condition, density and inflammation at a level you can’t see with the naked eye.
  • A clinical assessment and history.
  • Personalised written recommendations, in the order we’d do them.
  • Time to ask questions without being rushed.

What can we help with?

Clients come to our Scalp Clinic for many different reasons, including:

  • Hair loss, thinning and excessive shedding
  • Menopause-related changes to the hair and scalp
  • Hair and scalp changes associated with PCOS
  • Hormonal changes and shedding
  • Psoriasis and seborrhoeic dermatitis
  • Dry, oily, flaky, irritated or sensitive scalps
  • Build-up and scalp congestion
  • Changes in hair density or quality
  • General scalp health and preventative care
  • Sun and UV damage to the scalp

Some concerns can be improved or better managed with the right scalp care, professional treatments and home routine. Others may need further investigation by a doctor or dermatologist — and we’ll always tell you when we believe that’s the right next step.

Don’t just accept that “this is my hair now”

Perhaps your ponytail doesn’t feel as thick as it used to. You’re seeing more hair in the shower. Your scalp has become irritated. Your hair has changed through menopause. Or you’ve simply become used to living with a scalp that never feels completely comfortable.

A change doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing you can do about it.

Hair loss is often better approached early and preventatively. Understanding changes sooner gives you the opportunity to support your scalp and hair, and to determine whether anything needs further investigation.

Hormonal shedding and inflammation can often be supported. Scalp irritation and conditions can often be better managed. And sometimes changes to the way you care for your scalp and hair can make a meaningful difference.

Expertise you can trust

Scalp health isn’t an add-on at PeterJames — it’s part of our professional education.

Every member of the PeterJames salon team is NIOLOGIST accredited, with NIOLOGIST education supported by The Institute of Trichologists. This gives our team specialist education around the scalp, hair thinning and hair loss, allowing scalp health to form part of the conversation throughout the salon — not only when you’re attending a dedicated Scalp Clinic appointment.

Peter and James continue to develop their expertise through ongoing education in trichology, menopause, hormonal hair changes, hair loss and scalp science.

Through our professional partnerships with Nioxin and Wella Professionals, we can combine this knowledge with professional in-salon treatments and individually prescribed homecare.

We don’t believe in simply handing you products and sending you home. We want you to understand what we’re seeing, what it means, what we’re recommending and why.

Looking after the skin beneath your hair

Every member of the PeterJames team is also MASCED accredited.

Your scalp is skin, yet it’s one of the hardest areas of your body to properly check yourself. Because we work so closely with the scalp, we’re conscious of sun damage and unusual or suspicious-looking changes that you may not be able to see yourself.

We don’t diagnose skin cancer or suspicious lesions. However, if we notice something we believe should be checked, we’ll make you aware and recommend that you speak to your GP or dermatologist.

It’s another part of looking after the person underneath the hair — not just the hair itself.

How to prepare

  • Come with your hair as it normally is. Don’t wash it specially, and skip dry shampoo and styling product on the day if you can — we need to see the scalp as it actually behaves.
  • Bring photos if you have them. Hair loss is gradual, and photos from six or twelve months ago tell us far more than a description can.
  • Bring a list of medications and supplements, and any recent blood test results.

Your Scalp Clinic journey

Consultation → Digital scalp microscope → Personalised assessment → In-salon care → Prescribed homecare → Review

No two scalps are exactly the same, which is why no two plans should be either. Our aim is for you to leave understanding your scalp and hair better than when you arrived — with a clear plan for what happens next.

Cost

The consultation is a paid appointment, and it’s fully redeemable against anything we recommend — treatments, haircuts or products. If you go ahead with a plan, the consultation effectively costs you nothing.

Check availability and pricing for the current figure. You don’t need to know what you think is wrong before you book. That’s what the appointment establishes.

Your scalp is the foundation of your hair. Let’s start there.

“I can't recommend PeterJames Hairdressing highly enough - I had a fantastic salon experience with Peter! I really love the cut, but what's been incredible is the change in my hair's condition. It was thinning, like straw, tuggy after washing (couldn't pull my fingers through it), but now the texture is silken. For those of us of a certain age, or anyone suffering hair loss, "Peter James" (Haymarket) has one of only two hair salons in Scotland that has a Scalp, Menopause & Hair Loss Clinic. Absolutely five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“I’ve been going to see Peter since the salon opened and love it there, and would suggest them to anyone. I always come away feeling great about my hair but also myself. But today I had an amazing chat with Peter about the work they are doing to improve peoples scalps and their passion to help women going through perimenopause and menopause. Peter said someone close to him started going through this and he made it their mission to learn all they could. I’ve also seen the amount they learn about a product before bringing it into the salon and how important it is to them that they only suggest natural products. To see how much they care about their clients health and wellbeing, legit makes me emotional. 5 stars isn’t enough? They go above and far beyond.”

“My experience with Peter James Scalp and Hair Clinic has been truly life-changing, and I do not say that lightly. When I first walked through their doors, I was in a very vulnerable place. My hair and scalp had been severely damaged by poorly fitted extensions, leaving me not only in physical discomfort but emotionally distressed. The damage was so extreme that I had resorted to wearing partial wigs to hide what had happened. I felt embarrassed, defeated, and completely stripped of my confidence. My hair had always been part of my identity, and I genuinely feared I might lose it — along with a part of myself. From the very first consultation, James treated me with such kindness, patience, and understanding. He truly listened — not just to the practical concerns about my hair and scalp, but to the emotional toll it had taken on me. There was no judgement, only reassurance and a clear, knowledgeable plan forward. Alongside Peter, they carefully and thoughtfully began the process of restoring my hair’s health. The transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. Through their expert product recommendations, gentle treatments, and meticulous hands-on care, my scalp has healed and my hair has been brought back to life. But what they restored goes far beyond hair. They gave me back my confidence, my dignity, and my sense of self. What makes this clinic so special is not only their exceptional expertise, but their compassion. Every appointment feels unhurried and personal. The salon itself is a calm, welcoming sanctuary — a place where you feel safe and cared for. The entire team are warm, professional, and genuinely invested in their clients’ wellbeing.Without their delicate care, ongoing support, and honest guidance, I truly believe my outcome could have been very different. I am beyond grateful for the rescue they provided during one of the most difficult periods of my life.I cannot recommend them highly enough. If I could give 10 stars, I absolutely would. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for everything you have done for me. I am, without question, a lifelong client.”

“It was my first visit to Peter James after going to the same hairdresser for 40 years, so the change was always going to be difficult, but James welcomed me warmly (as did Lola) and I felt at ease straight away. He took great care and time to ask what I wanted and to look at my hair and its possibilities, and all the time we laughed . His assistant was careful and considerate in washing my hair and massaging my scalp (lovely). The whole experience was a very happy one due to be repeated soon.”
