FAQs & Salon Policies
Everything you need to know before visiting PJ
Every head of hair and every scalp is different, and so is every appointment.
Here you’ll find answers to some of the questions we’re asked most often, alongside the salon policies that help us look after our clients, our team and the appointment time reserved especially for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Appointments & Consultations
Do I need a consultation before booking?
Most PJ salon services can be booked directly.
For significant colour changes, corrective colour or if you’re unsure which service is right for you, we recommend an in-salon consultation first.
All hair extension services require an in-salon consultation and cannot be booked online.
If you’re unsure what to book, simply contact the PJ team. We’ll help determine the appropriate service, appointment time and stylist for you.
Can I book online?
Yes. Most of our salon services can be booked through our online booking system.
Hair extensions cannot be booked online, and some major colour corrections or transformations may require a consultation before an appointment can be arranged.
I’m not sure which stylist to choose. Can you help?
Absolutely.
Our team has different levels of experience, areas of interest and specialisms. Tell us a little about your hair and what you’d like to achieve and we can help guide you towards the right member of the team.
Colour
Do I need an Allergy Alert Test?
Yes.
All new PJ colour clients require an Allergy Alert Test at least 48 hours before their first colour appointment.
If it has been more than six months since your last colour service at PJ, another Allergy Alert Test will be required.
You don’t need an appointment for this — simply pop into PJ during our normal opening hours and a member of the team can carry this out for you.
Where an Allergy Alert Test is required, we cannot carry out your colour service without it.
Can you colour damaged hair?
Only where we believe it is appropriate and safe to do so.
Protecting the integrity of your hair comes before achieving a colour at any cost. Depending on its condition, we may adapt your colour plan, recommend professional treatments, carry out strand testing or suggest improving the condition of the hair before proceeding.
Sometimes achieving your dream hair means taking a little longer to get there.
Can you correct colour I’ve had done elsewhere or at home?
Yes. Corrective colour is an important part of what we do.
Because every correction is different, we may ask you to attend a consultation and, where appropriate, carry out strand testing before planning your service.
A correction may be achievable in one appointment or form part of a longer colour journey depending on your starting point, condition and desired result.
Can you take me from blonde to brunette?
Yes.
Going darker can be just as technically involved as going lighter. Depending on your starting point, underlying pigments may need to be reintroduced before your final colour is created.
PJ offers a dedicated Blonde to Brunette service designed around this process.
Do you offer grey blending as well as full grey coverage?
Yes.
Not everyone wants to completely cover their grey. We can create anything from softer blending and lower-maintenance results to more complete grey coverage.
Your stylist will discuss the result and level of maintenance you’re comfortable with before recommending an approach.
How often will I need my colour done?
There isn’t one answer for everyone.
Your natural colour, percentage of grey, chosen technique, rate of growth and desired finish all affect maintenance.
If lower maintenance is important to you, tell us. We can take this into account when designing your colour.
Scalp & Hair Loss Clinic
What happens during a scalp consultation?
We begin by talking.
We’ll discuss your concerns, hair and scalp history, routine and any changes you’ve noticed before carrying out a detailed professional assessment.
Where appropriate, we can use our Nio-Scope with up to 1000× magnification to take a much closer look at the scalp and hair.
From there, we can create a personalised professional care plan based on what we find.
Do you diagnose hair loss or scalp conditions?
No.
PJ works within the professional scope of hair and scalp care. We can assess the hair and scalp, recognise concerns and recommend appropriate professional care, but we do not medically diagnose hair-loss disorders or scalp conditions.
Where something requires medical diagnosis, investigation or treatment, we will recommend that you speak to an appropriate healthcare professional.
Knowing when to refer is just as important as knowing how to help.
Is the Scalp Clinic only for people experiencing hair loss?
Not at all.
Clients visit us for concerns including shedding, changes in density, dryness, oiliness, flaking and general scalp health, as well as hair thinning and hair loss.
You also don’t need to wait until something feels seriously wrong to start paying attention to your scalp.
Hair Extensions
Do I need a consultation for hair extensions?
Yes.
Every PJ hair extension service begins with an in-salon consultation and extensions cannot be booked directly online.
We assess your natural hair and scalp, density, desired result and lifestyle before recommending the most appropriate method.
Which extension methods do you offer?
PJ offers Mini Tips, Ultra Tips®, Tapes and Wefts using the Remi Cachet Elegance range.
The right method isn’t simply the one you prefer the look of. We’ll recommend the method — or combination of methods — that best suits your natural hair, scalp, desired result and lifestyle.
How much do hair extensions cost?
Hair extensions are completely bespoke, so pricing is provided following consultation.
Your quotation will depend on factors including the fitting method, length, amount of hair required and the result you want to achieve.
How long does extension hair last?
With the correct professional maintenance and prescribed homecare, Remi Cachet Elegance hair can last up to 12 months.
Longevity varies according to the individual, fitting method, lifestyle, maintenance and how the hair is cared for at home.
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
Protecting the hair you already have will always be as important to us as adding the hair you want.
We consider your natural density, scalp, weight, placement, tension and distribution when planning an extension service.
If we don’t believe extensions — or a particular fitting method — are suitable for your hair, we’ll tell you.
Your Visit
What happens if I’m running late?
Please contact us as soon as possible.
We reserve a specific amount of time for every client. Depending on how late you arrive, we may need to adapt your service or rearrange your appointment rather than compromise the result or run significantly into the next client’s appointment.
What if I want a completely different look?
Tell us.
We love inspiration pictures, but we’ll always interpret them through your own hair, features, condition and lifestyle.
For a significant transformation, we may recommend arranging a consultation before the service so that we can properly plan your appointment.
Will you show me how to look after and style my hair at home?
Absolutely.
Education is an important part of the PJ experience. Your stylist can talk you through how to care for your hair at home, how to style your haircut and which techniques, tools and professional homecare are most appropriate for you.
The aim isn’t simply for your hair to look great when you leave PJ — we want you to understand how to look after it between appointments too.
Will you recommend products for me?
Where appropriate, yes — but recommendations at PJ are personalised.
We work with a deliberately curated collection of professional brands rather than trying to have the biggest product wall.
Your stylist will recommend homecare based on your individual hair, scalp, colour and needs.
We don’t aim to have the biggest product wall. We aim to have the right one.
Discounts
Do you offer Student, NHS or OAP discounts?
Yes.
Student, NHS and OAP discounts are available Tuesday–Thursday on full-priced qualifying services.
Discounts do not apply to toners, treatments or add-on services.
During our festive period, these discounts are not available due to increased seasonal demand.
Please bring valid identification or proof of eligibility where applicable.
PJ Salon Policies
Our salon policies allow us to provide a fair and consistent service to every client while protecting the appointment time reserved especially for you.
-
Cancellations & Rescheduling
We understand that plans change.
If you need to cancel or rearrange your appointment, we require at least 48 hours’ notice.
Late cancellations and missed appointments may be subject to a cancellation charge.
Repeated late cancellations or non-attendance may mean that a deposit or payment is required before future appointments can be secured.
-
Deposits
Where a deposit is required to secure an appointment, all deposits are non-refundable.
If you need to reschedule your appointment and provide the required minimum 48 hours’ notice, your deposit can be transferred to your new appointment.
If an appointment is cancelled or rescheduled with less than 48 hours’ notice, or you do not attend your appointment, the deposit will be forfeited and a new deposit may be required to secure another booking.
Deposits are held against the appointment and deducted from the final balance where applicable.
Deposits are non-refundable, but transferable when an appointment is rescheduled within our cancellation policy.
-
Late Arrival
Please arrive in good time for your appointment.
If you’re going to be late, contact us as soon as you can.
Depending on the time remaining, we may need to adapt your appointment or reschedule it. We won’t compromise the quality or safety of a service to fit it into insufficient time.
-
Allergy Alert Testing
Client safety comes first.
All new PJ colour clients must complete an Allergy Alert Test at least 48 hours before their first colour appointment.
A new Allergy Alert Test is also required where it has been more than six months since your last colour service at PJ.
No appointment is necessary for testing — simply visit us during normal opening hours.
Where testing is required, we cannot proceed with the colour service without it.
Additional testing may also be required where appropriate under professional or manufacturer guidance.
-
Strand Testing & Service Suitability
Some services may require strand testing or further consultation before we proceed.
PJ reserves the right to adapt, postpone or decline a service where we believe proceeding could compromise the condition of your hair or scalp, produce an unsuitable result or fall outside what we can safely and professionally provide.
Our responsibility isn’t simply to say yes.
It’s to make professional decisions in the best interests of your hair and scalp.
-
Hair Extensions
All hair extension services require an in-salon consultation before booking.
Your natural hair and scalp must be considered suitable for the proposed service before we proceed.
Because extension hair is selected and ordered specifically for the individual client, your stylist will explain the ordering, payment and appointment requirements during your consultation.
Clients receiving extensions at PJ will be asked to agree to our Hair Extension Care Agreement and will receive our Hair Extension Do’s & Don’ts guidance.
Correct professional maintenance and homecare are essential to protect your natural hair, scalp and extensions.
-
Pricing
Our price list provides pricing for our salon services, but some appointments are individually quoted due to their bespoke nature.
This is particularly relevant to services such as hair extensions, corrective colour and significant colour transformations.
Where additional time, product or services are required beyond the original booking, your stylist will discuss this with you.
We want you to understand your treatment plan and expected cost before we proceed.
-
Concerns Following Your Appointment
We want you to love your hair.
If you have a concern following a service, please contact PJ directly as soon as possible so that we have the opportunity to assess your hair and understand what has happened.
Where appropriate, we may ask you to return to the salon so we can assess the result in person before recommending the next step.
Please avoid attempting to alter or correct the hair yourself, or having another salon alter it, before we’ve had the opportunity to assess your concern. Doing so may affect our ability to determine what has happened and how best to help.
-
Discounts
Student, NHS and OAP discounts are available Tuesday–Thursday only and apply to eligible full-priced services.
They do not apply to toners, treatments or add-ons and are not available during PJ’s festive period.
Proof of eligibility may be requested.

Professional Recommendations
The advice we provide is based on our professional assessment of your hair and scalp at the time of your visit.
Homecare, maintenance and follow-up recommendations form an important part of maintaining the condition of your hair and the results of your service.
Where we advise against a particular service or recommend an alternative approach, we do so with the integrity of your hair and scalp in mind.
